REALLY GREEN SMART'S TOP GARDENING TIPS FOR AUGUST

18 July 2017 by Really Green Smart Garden Company

August is usually one of the hottest months of the year (fingers crossed!) making watering and being water-wise essential. Try to use grey water when possible, especially as water butts may run low if it has been a dry summer where you live (you must be one of the lucky ones). August is also the main holiday season, so you might need to enlist the help of friends and family to water your plants while you are away.

Here are some great tips to keep your garden looking Really Green and Smart all summer long.

  • Take the time to prune summer-flowering shrubs.
  • Dead-head summer plants such as Pansies to prolong flowering.
  • Watering – especially containers and hanging baskets as these will dry very quickly in warmer weather – use recycled water or stored rainwater where possible – be water-wise.
  • Collect seeds from garden plants.
  • Harvest sweetcorn and other vegetables as they become ready for picking.
  • Keep your ponds and water features topped up.
  • Feed and weed your lawns to keep the grass roots strong and keep weeds at bay.
  • Lift and pot up rooted strawberry runners.
  • Trim and prune hedges and trees to clear any ‘dead’ foliage – this will keep the hedges and trees looking and growing healthily and promote thickening.
  • If you haven’t as yet…it’s time to think about painting the fence with wood preserver!

If this all sounds like too big a job for you and you wold like a helping hand, then give us a call and we would be happy to come round and help out.

Have fun in the sun and enjoy your garden!
