REALLY GREEN SMART'S TOP TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER

19 August 2016 by Really Green Smart Garden Company

September is generally a cooler month compared to July/August and the days are noticeably shorter. It’s at this time of year that those of you who have fruit or vegetable patches you will be reaping the rewards of harvest.

There is not as much to do at this time of year in the ornamental garden, but it is a good time to start to plant your spring flowering bulbs ready for next year and begin to collect your seeds for next summer’s garden colour too.

Make the most of what is left of the warm weather while you can, as autumn will soon start to take hold!

  • Dig up remaining potatoes before the slugs can get to them first!
  • As autumn brings the usual leaf fall, remember to cover your ponds with nets!
  • Cover leafy vegetable crops with bird-proof netting
  • If you have any autumn raspberries, now is the time to pick them.
  • Divide any herbaceous perennials you may have in your garden.
  • Now is a good time to clean your greenhouses and cold frames ready for use when the colder part of autumn comes around.
  • Plant your spring flowering bulbs.
  • Sow the seeds you have collected from your perennials and hardy annuals.
  • Begin the process of reducing the watering frequency of house plants in preparation for the colder months ahead.
  • Ensure that you keep outdoor plants watered, especially new ones, using the rainwater you may have collected – be water wise!
  • Apply autumn lawn feed which is high in potassium, this will harden your lawn against the winter. For best results apply this after scarifying and before you top dress your lawn. Do not apply summer feeds during September, always use autumn dressing to keep weak and soft growth at bay and reduce the risk of disease in the colder autumn weather.
  • This is a perfect month for creating your new lawns from turf or seed.
